Kink Allied and Poly-Affirming Therapy in Los Angeles

Mental health care for kinky and non-monogamous adults, couples, and polycules.

At Weaving Clarity, consensual kink and ethical non-monogamy are welcome without judgment. You can meet with us in person at our Long Beach office, which serves the Los Angeles area, or online from anywhere in California.

What Is Kink Allied and Poly-Affirming Therapy?

Kink allied and poly-affirming therapy is mental health care that respects consensual kink and ethical non-monogamy as valid parts of life. You can talk openly about your desires and relationships. Your therapist will not treat them as symptoms or try to change them.

A poly-affirming therapist, sometimes called a polyamory therapist, understands polyamory, open relationships, and other forms of consensual non-monogamy. They support the relationship structure you choose.

You can come to therapy for anything, including anxiety, trauma, grief, or relationship stress. Your kink and your relationships are welcome in the room, and each session focuses on what you want to work on. Our care is also LGBTQ+2S affirming for clients of all genders and sexual orientations.

Terms You May Come Across

A therapist who understands how consensual kink works, so you do not have to explain the basics.

A therapist who accepts kink as a healthy part of life. Also called kink allied.

Relationships in which all partners know about and consent to more than one relationship.

A relationship in which one partner is monogamous and the other is polyamorous.

A connected network of people in non-monogamous relationships with one another.

Support for Individuals, Couples, and Polycules

We offer individual therapy, couples therapy for open relationships, and polycule therapy. Whether you come alone, with a partner, or with several partners, therapy is shaped around your relationships as they are.

Individual Therapy

Support for your own wellbeing and identity, including questions about what kinds of relationships feel right for you.

  • Shame or worry about your desires
  • Exploring whether non-monogamy is right for you
  • Coming out to family, friends, or partners
  • Anxiety, depression, or trauma
  • Stress from stigma or judgment
  • Grief after a breakup or a change in a polycule

Couples and Polycule Therapy

Support for the relationships you share.

  • Opening a relationship
  • Jealousy and insecurity
  • Agreements, boundaries, and time with each partner
  • One partner wanting non-monogamy while another feels unsure
  • Different interests or limits around kink
  • Communication and repair after conflict

Some clients come in because a partner has asked to open the relationship. Therapy gives each of you space to talk through what you want and what worries you, at a pace that feels manageable.

Jealousy is common in polyamory, as it is in any relationship. Therapy can help you understand what the feeling is pointing to and how to talk about it with your partners.

Polycule therapy can include all partners together, a few partners at a time, or a mix of shared and individual sessions. Your therapist can help you choose the format that fits your goals.

What the Research Says About Kink and Polyamory

Three common questions, and what current research shows:

Is being kinky a mental illness?

No. The DSM-5, the manual clinicians use to diagnose mental health conditions, separates atypical sexual interests from paraphilic disorders. Consensual kink on its own is not a diagnosis.

Is kink a trauma response?

Not in itself. Studies have found that people who practice kink are, on average, as psychologically healthy as those who do not. For some people, kink and past experiences are connected, and a trauma-informed therapist can explore that with care.

Is polyamory mentally healthy?

It can be, like any relationship. Studies comparing consensually non-monogamous and monogamous relationships have found similar levels of relationship satisfaction and wellbeing. As with monogamy, healthy polyamory depends on honesty, consent, and communication.

Professional views of kink and non-monogamy have shifted in recent years, but they still vary from one therapist to another. With an affirming therapist, you can focus on your goals without having to defend your relationships.

Affirming care also means taking consent seriously. Therapy is a safe place to talk about any relationship or dynamic that no longer feels consensual or safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is kink-affirming therapy?

Kink-affirming therapy is mental health care that accepts consensual kink as a valid part of your life. You can talk about it openly, without it being treated as a disorder.

What is polyamory therapy?

Polyamory therapy, sometimes called poly therapy, is counseling for people in polyamorous or other non-monogamous relationships. It can include individual sessions, polyamorous couples therapy, or sessions with several partners in a polycule.

Can I talk to my therapist about my kinks?

Yes. A kink allied therapist will listen without judgment. You can share as much or as little as you choose, and what you share stays confidential within the usual legal limits of therapy.

What kind of therapist do I need if I have kinks?

For most concerns, such as anxiety, trauma, or relationship stress, a kink-aware or kink allied therapist is a good fit. For concerns about sexual function, a certified sex therapist can also help.

Where can I find a kink allied and poly-affirming therapist in Los Angeles?

Weaving Clarity offers kink allied and poly-affirming therapy for individuals, couples, and polycules. In-person sessions are at our Long Beach office, and online sessions are available anywhere in California, which can help when partners live in different parts of the state.
